Casa Grande man sentenced to seven years for armed robbery

(FLORENCE, AZ) - A Casa Grande man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for armed robbery.

On October 23rd, 2023, Pinal County Superior Court Judge Jason Holmberg sentenced Justin Velasco, 18, to seven years in the Arizona Department of Corrections, followed by three years probation.

Velasco pled guilty to Armed Robbery, a Class Two Dangerous Felony; and Aggravated Robbery, a Class Three Felony.

In December 2022, The Coolidge Police Department responded to a call of an armed robbery, with the reporting party indicating his son was robbed at gunpoint while on the way home from school. Officers responded to the 1800 block of S. 7th street and made contact with two witnesses, who told police they witnessed a black sedan stop, and the individuals inside got out with a baton-style weapon and robbed a person walking along the street, taking the victim’s backpack and other items. The witnesses were able to take a picture of the suspects and the vehicle.

Officers located a vehicle matching the description at a nearby business. Officers engaged a group of males inside the business, identified Velasco and noted he matched the physical characteristics of one of the suspects seen in the picture. Investigators located multiple firearms inside the vehicle upon serving a search warrant.
