Defendant Sentenced to 16 Years in Deadly DUI Crash

FLORENCE (July 30th, 2024) -  Pinal County Attorney Kent Volkmer announced Dillon Shifflett, 32, has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for a deadly DUI crash that killed a father and son in San Tan Valley.

On Monday afternoon, Pinal County Superior Court Judge Jason Holmberg sentenced Shifflett to 16 years in the Arizona Department of Corrections, followed by seven years of supervised probation.

Shifflett pled guilty to Manslaughter as a Class Two Dangerous Felony; and Manslaughter as a Class Two Non-Dangerous Felony.

"This is yet another example of the tragic consequences that occur when choosing to drive impaired," said County Attorney Kent Volkmer. "My sincerest thoughts and prayers are with the victims' family, and I hope they can begin the healing process."

In June, 2023, the Pinal County Sheriff's Office responded to a two-vehicle collision that occurred on Gary Road and Foot Hills Drive in San Tan Valley. Shifflett was identified as the driver of a 2016 GMC Sierra which slammed into a 2009 Volkswagen minivan making a left turn, killing both occupants of the minivan. The victims were both men, ages 23 and 65.

During the investigation, witnesses stated that Shifflett was driving "super fast" with a speed of roughly 90mph. The posted speed limit was 35mph. A blood draw showed Shifflett's BAC to be 0.116 and also showed the presence of THC in his system.

During sentencing, two of the victims' family members addressed the Court and detailed how their lives have forever changed, going from a tight knit family of six to four. One of them told the Court, "We will never feel whole again," and that, "I am in disbelief that this is my life and my reality." They said the father and son had left for the gym prior to the crash, and they remembered the victims' kind and funny spirit.
